How many pictures can I take with a 3.1 megapixel camera with a 1G SD card?

I am looking for a comparison chart that will show me the difference between 512MB, 1G, 2G SD memory cards and different megapixel cameras. I have a 3.1 MP camera and I am curious if it is necessary to purchase a 1G SD card or will a 512 be sufficient.

I have a 3.1 Mgpxl camera (hardly used now that I have upgraded) and I can tell you that 1 Gb card will give you over 1000 photos as a rough estimate (depending on the resolution you chose - the lower the resolution, the more photos you will ba able to take)
Reply:The picture which are taken in a 3.1 MP camera ll have sizes from 300 to 400 kb.. Now calculate the no. of photos u can store in a 512 mb,1g and in a 2g.. now u can select the sd cards according to ur usage..
Reply:my wife has a 5.1 megapixel camera and she has a 1 gig card in it and i believe she can take a little short of 1000 photos and print out at sizes above 8 1/2 by 11"
Reply:there is no hard and fast rule as it depends on the level of detail within each individual picture and the quality of the shot.


ed a picture of a black cat in a coal cellar will take up relatively little room on a card as there is little data in the picture


a snowman in a field with no hedges will also take up little room


a bride and groom at a wedding against a blue/white/whatever background has much more detail in the shot but not even close to as much detail of the same couple having multicoloured confetti thrown over them in a pretty garden with flowers and trees with leaves etc


this is why there are no charts available because if a company publishes "you will get 24 pictures" and you are taking highly detailed shots and you only get 22 on the card you are not going to be happy are you?


as a rule of thumb, the more pixels the camera, the bigger the card needs to be for the same number of pictures


i tend to go for the biggest card my camera can cope with that way I'm never going to be caught out am ?

Reply:Depends on how high the resolution of each picture is. With a high reolution not nearly as many as at a lower reolution. That is why they keep making bigger and bigger cards. There is a 4 gig SD card out there now. The higher the resolution the more you can blow up parts of it without it looking bad.
