Why havent SD cards replaced CD's and DVD's for music, movies and games?

The SD card can now take 16gb and the SD Mirco a major 8gb

Why havent SD cards replaced CD's and DVD's for music, movies and games?
it's about universal formats. it's a bit like why people don't use OGG instead of MP3.

you can get cars stereo's etc that will take SD cards if you look around.

Ringo star has released his new album on a usb pen drive, and there is things such as solid state hard drives (sandisk make em) . It's just not a univeral format as yet and it's not as cheap as pressing up dvd's or cd's in a pressing plant. (how that works, is the more a company press , the cheaper the cost)
Reply:Solid state devices such as SD cards usually have slower access times, and even slower write times.
Reply:Do you have an SD card reader in your car that is hooked up to your stereo so you can listen to music? Do you have an SD port in your living room that is hooked up to your TV? Now think of this:

Do you have a CD player in your card? Do you have a DVD player hooked up to your TV?

If you are a normal human being (with a fairly recent car,) you'd say yes to both of those questions.
Reply:Among other things - cost. A blank CD or DVD costs significantly less then an SD card of similar capacity.
Reply:blu-ray is taking over anyway...
Reply:For starters not all pcs have an sd reader or writer so this is an additional expense and add on. Secondly, the media is also very expensive compared to CDs or DVDs, thirdly the access rate is far slower and would probably be far tooslow should you wish to record a whole movie onto one (needs much morethan a mere 16GB anyway).
Reply:For one,

SD is a storage format that most music boxes would not recognize.

Again - the media is expensive.

Third - it is in use in various MP3 and PocketPC devices where it does provide great support.
